After introductory chapters outlining the overall path and some of the problems of fusion research, Braams and Stott cover open systems and pulsed closed systems with a chapter each. They then devote about half the book to research on confining the plasma with closed steady-state magnetic surfaces, especially in the stellarator and the tokamak, a toriodal system originally proposed by A.D. Sakharov and I.E. Tamm in 1951.

…they more than touch on social, economic, and political factors while emphasizing the physics in a valuable one-volume account of the course of fusion research, sprinkled with memorable quotes from outstanding characters in the field. They trace the gradual merging in the late 1970's of physics-oriented research on plasma phenomena and performance-oriented research toward reactor design - what they call reductionistic and holistic approaches - into the physics of reactor-grade plasmas in reactor-like devices.

Braams and Stott begin and end with the enigmatic quotation from Artsimovich of 1972: 'Fusion will be there when society needs it.' They also pose the question 'Is a fusion reactor an interesting proposition from a scientific, technical, social, and economic point of view?' Evidently, they conclude it is scientifically and technically feasible and it seems desirable but it will be costly to achieve.

If commercial exploitation is realized in the projected time, Braams and Stott (like many of us) will not be here to see it; but they have compiled an excellent account of the principles, background, development, and progress made during the first half of the world-wide fusion research program.

Dissing the dirt

I bought this book as I've always liked Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. However from the off it was obvious that this wasn't your usual seeping with false sentiment and unrealistic adoration of a pair of comic geniuses. What strikes me as I read this was that Judy manages to make you dislike them, yet her whining indifference and absolute refusal to stand up for herself are both annoying and self indulgent. I really felt for this woman as I read the first half, then as she lets herself appear indifferent to Cooks constant infidelity, and drunken rages, going as far as to say that when she lost her dad he wasn't in the slightest kind or supportive to her, that was at the beginning of their relationship I personally would have told him to bugger off at this point. Anyhow every time he goes from despicable to vile, for example he allegedly shared a prostitute with Dudley on more than one occasion, and Judy then has to go to a doctor and has blocked fallopian tubes due to some vile sexually transmitted disease. She even has cervical cancer and is so accepting of this as she has some of her cervix removed, again relating that she understands poor Peter and how he is such a sensitive man, and it's not his fault. God it's so annoying I really felt for her but when she gets treated more and more atrociously she just doesn't react in a normal sane way. Is it her low self esteem etc. or is it the power of celebrity has over her? To be fair in the beginning she seemed to have her own succesful career until she dropped it all for him. Dudley Moore isn't much mentioned in the book there are no real stories relating to him just the odd mention of him and his wife Tuesday who again treats Judy so appallingly after sleeping with Cook it's laughable. I personally couldn't or wouldn't want the world to know if I'd have been so subservient and forgiving of bascially a mentally ill man, who whether kind or sensitive in more sober times was a monster, and yes I know the cliche of the haunted comic genius who is impossible to live with. Dudley comes across as an uncaring self serving ass, but of course he went after Judy just because she was mad about Peter. It makes you wonder what on earth was going on.
If you like reading the gossip pages and the likes of Heat magazine then this is for you. A good read in terms of dissing the dirt on two of British comedys icons of the 60s and 70s but leave well alone if you have fond feelings for this man because I honestly can say that I'll never enjoy anything of his fully again, even if only 10% of this book were true.

A solid study of light!

This book has got it all--practical, insightful, and well-organized. Sadly, it has got just slightly too much of it all, I found it long-winded at times. That being said, still an very good book if you are interested in such effervescent matters as light and how man attempts to control it.

Extremely good introduction!

This is an extremely well written introduction to a rapidly developing field. The authors cover a broad swath of topics, providing a clear understanding of the physical principles underlying numerical astrophysics. Such a focus on basic principles and physical understanding ensures that one does not lose sight of the forest for the trees. I recommend this book highly for graduate students in astrophysics, as well as active researchers in the field who want a quick overview before going into the details.

Excellent overview of Numerical Astrophysics

The book Numerical Methods in Astrophysics is an excellent overview to the field. It does a good job of finding the middle ground between being concise enough to be readable, but containing sufficient information to be useful. Many of the chapters could be expanded to full length texts themselves if the authors included all the details and multiple examples of how to code things, but this is not the purpose of this book. Rather, the purpose is to introduce a graduate student or active researcher to the field, and to give a brief overview of the field as understood by the authors. Each chapter is a mostly self-contained review of the subject of that chapter, and includes sufficient references to more primary literature so the interested reader can learn more if he or she desires.

I don't know of any other book available that covers so many active areas in numerical astrophysics so well. It's not a perfect book, but I highly recommend it if you want to have one book in your personal library as a go-to reference for the field.

Excellent reference book

This is an excellent introduction to Numerical Astrophysics. If you want to learn a particular topic (i.e. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics), the chapters are short, sweet and self contained. It will give you the necessary logic and basic physics used in the field, which will empower you to understand the literature.

Often when approaching a new field, the literature is impossible to learn from b/c papers aren't written for newbies. This is a great reference book that fills that void and gets you up to speed and prepares you to read the research. I just wish that it was a bit cheaper.

Is reincarnation possible? Tucker's book full of real-life evidence and an explanation of how quantum physics allows for it makes one think the better question may be Is it impossible? Basing his argument on a study of more than 40 years' duration into the lives, present and past, of more than 2,500 children, psychiatrist Tucker makes a pretty solid case in favor of reincarnation. He opens with the story of William, born five years after his policeman grandfather, John, was killed, with birth defects similar to John's fatal wounds. William was able, at three, to report John's last moments, of which he couldn't possibly have had any knowledge. Then there is the Turkish child who insisted on being called by the name of a man who had lived 50 miles away. Taken to the man's town, the child proceeded to the man's home and identified the man's parents in a roomful of people. Excellent study on children who remember past lives

I highly recommend this book over any other book on the subject of past lives. Dr. Tucker, who has taken over the practice since the passing of his predecessor Dr. Ian Stevenson began this project, researches and studies subjects using a scientific approach, which few others do such as Carol Bowman, at least she never mentions any in her book but instead just accepts people's claims. Dr. Stevenson's work was brilliant but this book removes the rather dry scientific case study approach and makes it more readable. What makes Tucker's stories amazing is the subjects are children between the ages of about 4 - 7 who remember previous lives that are verifiable because often the previous persons died shortly before these children were born. The studies take these children to villages or to families of the deceased to verify or "solve" the question of whether this person really is the deceased person incarnate. The stories will astound you and have you convinced that we've most likely all been here before and will no doubt be here again.

Kudos, Dr. Tucker

This review is long overdue... One of the cases in Dr. Tucker's book involves members of my family. I was initially a bit leery about giving Dr. Tucker permission to use our story, even with the aliases. Unfortunately, I have learned from "sharing" that journalists often take liberties with the truth and that skeptics can muster a whole lot of cruel anger. I don't need convincing regarding reincarnation and my mission in life is not to convert doubters, so there was no reason for me to subject myself to another attack of skeptical criticism. Concerns notwithstanding, I like and respect Dr. Tucker immensely and gave him the go-ahead. I was not disappointed. He stuck to the facts while respecting my family's privacy. For that I am deeply appreciative. I am also grateful that Dr. Tucker has written such a wonderfully informative book, one that I am proud to share with my friends and family, both the believers and the cynics.

It is very comprehensive, more likely to be used as reference material than read all at once. The information is detailed and needs careful study to gain full insight into the practicalities. The book is a very helpful adjunct to any therapist explaining aspects of cerebral palsy to a parent, but on its own it may appeal most to an inquiring literate carer.

It is well set out, and easy to read with summaries and footnotes in each chapter and clearly illustrated diagrams. It gives a very complete picture of all the areas to be considered... This book is a good source of practical suggestions and sound background information for any parent or professional interested in cerebral palsy.
It is an extremely useful book, easy to dip into, and I would definitely recommend its use in any home, therapy department or clinic. The level of information gives the reader opportunity to understand the background of the approach to handling cerebral palsy and is therefore encouraging and hopeful in preparing a baby or child for the future. Excellent 1 of my 2 'must haves' for parents & professionals

I'd been a special education teacher before our son was born, then served for 15 years as a Developmental Disabilities Specialist (mental health DD case manager). Now I'm back with special education, and our son, who has multiple developmental disabilities himself, is doing wonderfully. I came across Nancie's book by chance when our son was 1 year old when an OT checked in Nancie's book in my presence. After seeing how valuable it was (it was used as a text book at PSU at the time) I determined I would not go home (two hours away) until I owned a copy! That was an excellent decision.
Even after 20 years, I still useNancie's book. I recommend her book to everyone who loves, lives with, or works with young people with ANY type of motor impairment. It has many useful applications. For instance, it describes ways to play, set up a room, cope, physical handling, toileting, eating, sleep, ways to make stuff inexpensively, enjoy, and it also describes typical development, grief, and growth. Her illustrations are simply and convey useful information in realistic situations. Nancie writes forthrightfully and constructively. Challenging, too, in a bracing manner. There is no wallowing in pity or mincing of words. Yet, in all of this, Nancie conveys positive acceptance, focuses on forward movement, and she somehow shares that disabilities, after all, are part of all that is normal. Then she sets about showing you how to teach, love, and care for a child.
If you want an informative, practical "how to," this is the book you want. I've always felt, as a parent, that this book is something like having a PT/OT/friend/teacher/mentor in my pocket. That is in spite of being a special educator, myself. Someone who supposedly knows what to do. Sorry, no one is prepared for everything that can happen. Nancie provides a holistic and realistic guide... one that speaks directly, constructively, and respectfully. She focuses on taking action and on results. As a professional, her book can be very useful when working with individuals, families and/or staff. For young people growing up with disabilities, it can offer good illustrations to show how to do things. The text, however, at least in my 20 year old copy, is written for adults, not children.
This book is one of two books I'd like every person to have who lives or works with people who have motor impairments, neurological disorders, or cognitive impairments, to have. Social workers, doctors, RNs, therapists, interventionists, students, teachers, and fellow parents, this is a tool I believe you will value, use, and enjoy. (My other "must have" is the classic "Your Child's Self Esteem" by Dorothy Corkille Briggs. It is good for any relationship as well as for interacting with anyone. It certainly is not "just" for use with children.)

Okay, but.............

I read this book when my son was first diagnosed with CP 10 years ago. It contained a wealth of useful information but also contained information on how a "normal" baby/child would develop. I did not care for that portion of the book although I understand the authors reasoning in so doing. I also read the book Children with Cerebral Palsy -- I found it easier to read.

so useful to families and therapists working with children with Cerebral ...

Even though it is a book written so many years ago, by a therapist that worked with Dr. and Mrs. Bobath, it is still, to this date, so useful to families and therapists working with children with Cerebral Palsy. The orientation to parents is simple, easy and unexpensive to apply. By taking in consideration the family life and not trying to turn parents into therapists, it gives wonderful ideas on playing, dressing, carrying and adaptive seating to aid the child to participate in the family routine. I recommend this book 100%.
