A fascinating story

For a debut novel, with Taken Jacqui Rose came up with a winner with well developed characters, a good setting and great writing. The plot is well constructed with enough suspense, revelations and leads that makes it breath-taking. Giving up a child and then coming back for it is a fascinating theme, which I also intriguingly dealt with in The Sweetest Madness. It is a theme I enjoy because it brings to mind redemption which is what I think life is centered on.

Tedious and Slow

Don't know what the other people were reading, this really isn't that good of a book.

Good point:
The beginning of the story is fine and the characters are clearly presented. You can visualise what is going on and it is always good when you can do that.

Bad points:
OK, we know Casey has been through a lot and we can kind of 'feel' what she must have gone through (and is going through!). To drag this on and on and then again at the AA meeting is just plain tedious. Get on with the story and tell the readers what is going to happen next. The Casey character doesn't make sense --- She was young when she had a child. She had to give her up. She then felt really guilty all those years; and even after marrying a great guy, she couldn't let it go (even a little by simply talking with her fantastic husband). The book portrays Casey is a WEAK (never knows what to do, hesitant), PATHETIC (her life is a perpetual circle), UNDECISIVE (she never knows what to do), PITIFUL (feeling sorry for herself virtually every other page you read), and SELF-DESTRUCTIVE (having reckless and meaningless sex with anyone with an XY chromosome and a raging alcoholic). --- So, how come such a person has the guts to take all her money and go to London. She just doesn't seem to have this kind of will power or resourses (mentally) to pull this off. It really is a tiresome read!!!

I sure won't be reading her second instalment.

Brilliant debut novel

After seeing various recommendations from people about Jacqui Rose debut novel Taken I bit the bullet and downloaded it onto my Kindle. I promptly forgot about it and it got swallowed up into my stupidly extensive list of books I have yet to read. However, her name kept popping up and with her exceptional rating on Amazon (4 out of 5 over 100 reviews) I picked it up. I must say that I am very glad I did now. What was I thinking leaving it that long?

One thing that must be hard as a new author is standing out from the crowd. The crime genre is generally littered with the longer standing authors and it must be hard work for the debut novelists out there. Thankfully with the word spreading amongst readers I am glad to see Jacqui Rose come up frequently. She has chosen to write her debut novel based in London and featuring some heavy `hard-men'. With a London Gangster feel to it I wondered if she would be well remembered with authors that are practically legends such as Martina Cole, Mandasue Heller and Kimberley Chambers out there.

I started reading and met the main character of the book Casey Edwards. Casey had turned up in Soho following a hard life which involved giving away her child at 15 and then turning to alcohol, men and drugs to get through her life. She is hoping for a fresh start and the ability to find her child and put things right. After arriving in London she meets Mob boss Alfie Jennings, the cruel and vindictive partner of his Oscar and before long is caught up in their world. She also meets Vaughn who is an ex-gangster and an absolutely brilliant character.

The first half of the book takes us into the murky world of Alfie and Oscar and I would be lying if I said that some parts of the book are not pleasant reading. However, it makes it all the more authentic (and a hell of a lot more exciting to read). The topics covered involve money, drugs, trafficking and sex and that's just to name a few. If this sort of thing doesn't rock your boat in terms of fiction then this may not be the book for you. One thing I want to point out is that there IS swearing and violence in this book. It grates on me occasionally when I read reviews with people complaining about this. Would you expect a London Gangster to point to the door and politely ask his arch rival to vacate the building because he can't bear to speak to him? Err I think not...point made!

The second half of the book was a lot more exciting as Casey finds herself in the middle of a very dangerous situation. Oscar Harding was a vile character and I was crossing my fingers and hoping for the worst for him from start to finish. Towards the end things became even faster paced and the ending was wrapped up with the right amount of excitement and drama. It would be nice to see a couple of the characters again in future books but we will have to wait and see what Jacqui Rose has in store for us next time. As I said before, with the British crime writers out there already it must be hard work to join the dizzy heights of the `Crime Queens' we have out there, however with this debut novel Jacqui Rose is well on her way! I look forward top her new release in March 2013.

I had recently purchased Barefoot Doctor's guide to the Tao and thought I would get another book from the same author because I liked it so much. I was dismayed to discover that it is exactly the same book, page per page, just a different title. I think they could have disclosed this fact.

(610 pages, Institute of Physics Publishing, Bristol

and Philadelphia) is a modern, rigorous and

unusually comprehensive introduction into the physics

of continua. The book is structured into 32 chapters,

divided into five parts (i.e., Introduction, Fluids at

rest, Deformable solids, Basic hydrodynamics and

Special topics), addressing both the prevalent

university syllabus and more exotic topics such as

gravity waves, dynamics of vortices, self-similar

boundary layers, subsonic flights, etc. Furthermore,

the book has three appendices dedicated to Newtonian

particle mechanics, curvilinear coordinates and

thermodynamics of ideal gases, and additional material

can be found on the book's home-page at

along with an extensive index and an annotated

bibliography make the book an invaluable tool for both

graduate and under-graduate students.

A common misconception of most physics students is

that physics of continuous matter is a very

mathematical subject. Lautrup's book, however, gives

an excellent account of all major topics on the

subject starting only from the most elementary

mathematics and introducing the rest on a need-to-know

basis. Most chapters have a light commencement which

appeals to our everyday experience with the

macroscopic world, and then slowly introduce the key

physical concepts. Short historical notes, sketchy

micro-biographies of great scientists, marvelous

graphical side-notes along with a few tables of

constants make the text a gratifying reading. All

chapters end with a few problems some of which are

theoretical side-issues of the main text. Among the

many qualities of this book there are five that

deserve special attention. First, equations are dealt

with in a very scholastic manner, the most important

ones being placed in a box. Second, the author took

great care in marking the sections and the problems

which either fall slightly outside the main line of

the text or they require more advanced mathematics.

Third, there are quite a number of footnotes which

give valuable up-to-date references to many of the

subjects dealt with in the main text. This particular

feature makes it perfect for readers just starting

their graduate studies who desire also a glimpse at

the current research. Fourth, and rather rare for

textbooks on this subject, the book gives a balanced

view on mechanics of continua by accompanying

well-known analytical methods with various numerical

techniques. For this reason two chapters have been

dedicated to computational aspects of elastostatics

and fluid dynamics and a number of Mathematica codes

are freely available on the book's home-page. Fifth,

and foremost important, the chapters can be used to

some extent independent of one another and, of course,

this was done with the cost of some repetitions.

However, when reading the book in full these

repetitions come as a welcomed and sometimes necessary

refresher on previously discussed subjects, only to

underline its scholastic nature.

At first glance the book stems out of a set of

lectures delivered by the author for a number of years

at Copenhagen University, Denmark. More intimately

however, this almost encyclopedic book is due to the

author's joy of doing physics, no matter its flavor. A

high energy physicist by training Benny Lautrup has

written a magnificent book on one of the oldest

subjects in science, a book that I wholeheartedly

recommend to any student with a keen interest in

physics. This is a book written by an impassioned

physicist for impassioned scholars.

Tour de force and a generic approach

"Continuum physics describes the physical world on a macroscopic scale". With this quote at hand the author gives the reader a 600-page tour de force through the underlying principles of continuum physics and it application in geophysics, astrophysics, engineering, biophysics, and nonlinear sciences such as rheology. Subjects taught in engineering classes but rarely make their way to physics classes and vice versa are joined. The book is divided into five chapters on Basic Concepts on Physics (Introduction), Fluids at Rest, Deformable Solids, Basic Hydrodynamics and a section of Special Topics. Within those chapter common knowledge is presented in a straightforward manner but also various side aspects will surprise the reader. For example, the author discusses the "urban myth" of bathtub vortex', Big Bang and Newton cosmology, and lubrication. The beauty of this approach is that subjects, who belong together or are link to each other, are presented in one generic approach. The condensed presentation of the individual subjects, the introduction of the governing equations as well as numerous figures keep the vast amount of knowledge digestible and accessible. Actually the fact that a lot of equations I normally look up in different textbook, and eventually not finding them, are summarized here qualifies the book as reference. Readers should have a background in continuum mechanics and/or engineering to access the material properly. For basic classes in continuum mechanic the book is suitable as well. The bit about attracting men that I wasn't getting was the bit this revised version drove home to me.
Basically, men are shallow creatures and if you look hot AND RESPECT YOURSELF, they are gonners.
I have no trouble whatsoever looking hot - I am very thankful that it is easy for me. But I had a psychological barrier stopping me doing this because the men would flock, I'd misinterpret their intentions time and again and I got burned, time and again.

Excellent!!

This book is excellent. It concentrates on all areas of life - Health, Spiritual/Religious life, Work/Career, Financial, Personal Relationships, Family/Extended Family and Friends/Social Life. The book helped me to judge life objectively with the help of seven simple forms; recognise what is important to me in my life and inspired me to take decisions to acheive those goals. It has taught me that since I am my best friend who knows every moment, behavoiur and action of my life, I am the best person to make the decisions also.

You see a lot of "me" and "I" in the prevoius paragraph - the whole objective is just that - focus on what you can change and make it better for everyone. "me" is not in the sense of a self-centered, big-headed person but to define every problem in a way you can see solutions instead of blaming someone else.

Expert literature about Marie Antoinette and her short and tragic life. Starts with her as a carefree child who is suddenly married off to the Dauphin. She's stripped at the border, then begins her new life at Versaille. The Dauphin is very reserved at first, but the gay Marie Antoinette revive a happier boy. His famous "Rein" is found in his journal after a night of nothing in bed with Marie Antoinette.Their marriage is very unusual. Respect, but no intimacy. The king however is enjoying himself very much with the famous Madame Du Barry. (He is married to another woman by the way.) Marie Antoinette never like Du Barry because of her being always beside the king. Why? Because Marie Antoinette needed as much of the kings attention to keep him interested in her, so the the Astria-France alliance is kept alive. With no child(ren) the king may break off the alliance. Suddenly, the king dies of chicken pox, and the debt and ruling stress is therefore put on the 19 year old Louis XVI (the Dauphin).
