What would you say to an owlet who is afraid of the dark? Would you tell him the dark is exciting, or fun, or beautiful? Each time that Plop, the young barn owl, announces his dislike for darkness to a forest friend, a reason to exchange his habits for more "owly" ones arises. Sophie Aldred is an animated Plop. Her voice rises and falls with determination or doubt, and squeaks with childlike enthusiasm as Plop makes each new discovery. Her clear and measured presentation underscores the story's repetition and offers time to savor the gentle teaching and love of this owl family. Superb recording of a great story. A constant delight.
By Verbatim
This is our very favorite of the many recorded books my daughter and I have enjoyed. More children should hear it! It's a perfect children's gift for a range of ages, probably especially for 2-6 year olds. My daughter has listened to it many, many times over about six years so far. I have also heard it many times and yet still enjoy it. The reader is amazingly adept at doing different voices and accents for the various characters in the story.

It's a story of overcoming a fear through exploration. Through asking people what they think about it, the character, Plop, becomes increasingly familiar with the dark and less afraid of it as he sees it in new ways. The book is funny as well as wise.

Review of "The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark" Book & Plush Set =)
By Thelma
I received this precious little book & plush set as a gift. The set is presented in a pretty little box with a window in the front. The adorable little toy owl looking out at you from inside the box is an automatic, "Awww!" =)
The paperback book is a sweet story to encourage children to see the positive aspects of nighttime and the dark. The illustrations are truly lovely. =) I enjoyed a few British words used in the story-- "Wellingtons" and "Father Christmas". When I read the story to the children for whom I nanny, the older ones quickly surmised the meanings of those unfamiliar words (we are in the USA). =) All of the children (ages seven months - nine years) loved the book and have asked me to read it to them again and again. =) The older kids (ages eight and nine) have also read it to the younger ones. =)
The story is so sweet. It shows growth on so many levels. As little "Plop", the owlet, makes his way through the story, we see him learning the many ways that nighttime and the dark can be appreciated, as little by little, he overcomes his fear. As he is introduced (by a series of kindly characters) to positive and happy aspects of the dark, Plop's perspective and thoughts begins to change. At the same time, Plop's sleeping habits are beginning to mirror his parents', and his flying skills improve! =) By the end of the book, Plop is a happy little night bird who goes off in the dark to hunt with his parents-- the owly equivalent to "happily ever after"!! =)
The tiny plush owlet that comes in this set is ever so cute. =) It fits in the palm of my hand. The children are completely enchanted by it and hold it gently in their hands as if it was a real baby bird! =) They take turns holding it as we read the book. =)
This set is so sweet, sure to be enjoyed by any lucky child who receives it! =) Because of the cute presentation, it would make a lovely birthday or baby shower gift.
I give this lovely book & toy set five owly stars!! =) *****

One of the greatest childrens books written
By emiller@abacus.bates.edu
As a child I was terrified of the dark. It wasn't until I read this book that I realized there are lots of fun things to do after the lights go out. Plot is a baby barn owl, an unlikely canidate for being afraid of the dark. He is sent out by his mother to learn about the dark. Through seven different people, he learns that "dark is super." You will fall in love with Plot and so will your kids.
