Shadow Spell (The Cousins O'Dwyer Trilogy), by Nora Roberts

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts comes a trilogy about the land we’re drawn to, the family we learn to cherish, and the people we long to love.…

With the legends and lore of Ireland running through his blood, falconer Connor O’Dwyer is proud to call County Mayo home. It’s where his sister, Branna, lives and works, where his cousin, Iona, has found true love, and where his childhood friends form a circle that can’t be broken…

A circle that is about to be stretched out of shape―by a long-awaited kiss.

Meara Quinn is Branna’s best friend, a sister in all but blood. Her and Connor’s paths cross almost daily, as Connor takes tourists on hawk walks and Meara guides them on horseback across the lush countryside. She has the eyes of a gypsy and the body of a goddess…things Connor has always taken for granted―until his brush with death propels them into a quick, hot tangle.

Plenty of women have found their way to Connor’s bed, but none to his heart until now. Frustratingly, Meara is okay with just the heat, afraid to lose herself―and their friendship―to something more. But soon, Connor will see the full force and fury of what runs in his blood. And he will need his family and friends around him when his past rolls in like the fog, threatening an end to all he loves.…

From Booklist
Cabhan is coming. Despite the best efforts of Connor O’Dwyer and his circle of family and friends, the sorcerer will not stop until he has his revenge against the descendants of dark witch Sorcha. Since Connor, his sister Branna, and their cousin, Iona Sheehan, are the latest group of three to have inherited Sorcha’s powers, they are all number one on Cabhan’s hit list. Everyone’s safety depends on working together to defeat Cabhan, but much to his surprise, Connor finds himself distracted by Meara Quinn. The two have always enjoyed a terrific working relationship, until an unexpected kiss reveals the true passion they feel for each other. Pursuing a romantic relationship with Meara, however, is a risk. Not only could Connor lose her friendship; getting closer to Meara could make her an easy target for Cabhan. Roberts has a real flair for seamlessly melding day-to-day domestic details and the supernatural, and the second in her Cousins O’Dwyer trilogy not only delivers a satisfying love story but also effectively sets things up for the coming final confrontation with Cabhan. --John Charles

Formulaic but with a few surprises.
By Annelies Aurilis
I've been reading Nora Roberts' books since I was twelve years old and didn't realize what the "magic" and "desire" in her books were (don't worry, I wised up by age thirteen, but I still like how she describes the hot sex her characters always have). The first trilogy I read was the Three Sisters series (by far my favorite), and every time she has a new book out I'm quick to grab it.

Recently, though, as much as I love her books, I have to agree with other readers: they're so formulaic that it's hard to not make comparisons with other trilogies and other characters. If there's someone who's a new NR fan, then, fine, this is a good series for them.

The Cousins O'Dwyer trilogy seems to be just a repeat of The Keys and Three Sisters trilogies. I love her setting: she describes Ireland beautifully, as she always has, but the O'Dwyers resemble the Gallaghers of Ardmore strongly. I like the romances thus far, and I'm fond of Connor and Meara the most, but I'm looking forward to Finn and Branna's relationship, although I think it will just be an expy of Mia and Sam's from Three Sisters.

I think I would actually prefer the prologues of each book (thus far) to serve as her new trilogy. Right now, though, I'm sticking to NR's single volumes (Public Secrets, The Witness, and The Villa are my favorites).

The Circle of Friendship Grows Stronger... But Evil Still Lurks...
By terrylynn
Shadow Spell, the follow up to Dark Witch continues the story of the cousins O'Dwyer as the "three", Branna, Connor and Iona strengthen the bonds with their friends, Meara, Boyle and Fin who carries the blood of the evil sorcerer they seek to kill... Cabhan. Cabhan's powers are strong and his goal is to weaken the circle of friends with repeated attempts to kill Meara, especially now since Connor has declared his love for her after a lifetime of friendship.

This book focuses on the growing romance between Connor and Meara and the desperate measures they have to take to ensure Meara's safety as Cabhan is determined that she is the best way to weaken the power they use against him. But the friendship between the six and their fierce determination to kill him once and for all grows even stronger as each of them realize that it will take all their individual strengths... of the heart, mind and body, to defeat the sorcerer before he can destroy all they hold dear.

Initially we are taken back in time to once again see how the children of the Dark Witch Sorcha are faring after her death, and this is particularly important since Connor finds a way to reach through the centuries and meet up with Sorcha's son Eamon thereby sharing important information and strengthening their bonds of family. Having Eamon and Connor able to meet and converse added an extra element to the story and helped to tie it all together. The six friends meet regularly to enjoy each others company, make plans and give each other strength for the coming battle and I found these times when the six are all together very satisfying as we get a deeper look at each character and how they fit into this circle of friendship and family. The scenes where they confront Cabhan keep the story moving and in the end it's the power of love and their dedication to one another that sees them through, even when things are at their worst. The good versus evil theme is strong with a touching secondary story about Meara and her mother that gives us a better glimpse into her character and the fears she has as she realizes she is seeing Connor in a whole new way.

If you like Nora Roberts, magic, spells, good versus evil and the power of the strength that love and friendship can provide, then Shadow Spell will be a satisfying read and keep you wondering how the O'Dwyer cousins and their friends will finally do away with the evil Cabhan once and for all and I look forward to the last book in the trilogy, Blood Magick giving us the answers.

Barely just ok.....
By Bookworm1019
I eagerly look forward to any Nora Roberts book and usually am never disappointed. However, the second in the Odwyer trilogy is just ok. It really dragged from the first page, and was very, very predictable. Page after page of repetitive information, ie " We are the three, We are of the witch, etc etc etc". Too much, "don't go near the woods", bad guy shows up in everybody's dreams, blah, blah.
It is almost as though she didn't really write a new book, but took the Key trilogy and changed the names and the animals.
Not her best, not at all
