Disappointing treatment of true genius

This is not a particularly good book. It is only readable because of the fascinating live that Michael Faraday lived. The author gives us a sense of that, but he could have used a more vigorous copy editor. And perhaps he could have refrained from filling page after page with quotations from different scientists of the day.
This is not a biography as such, more an account of Faraday's work and that of his associates at the Royal Institution and around the world. It offers some interesting historical insights, but overall it disappoints. ... for a 200-page paperback with B&W illustrations??

An Epic Account of the Work of Faraday by a Later Successor in Chemical Physicist and Modern Director of the Royal Institution

This is a brilliant book, which has been methodically researched in great detail by Professor Sir John Meurig Thomas FRS, who has made his own great contributions to chemical physics and is therefore in a great position to judge the importance of Faraday's contributions to both chemistry and physics. John made important scientific contributions in the field of solid state chemistry as Head of Department in the Edward Davies Chemical Laboratories in Aberystwyth, where he pioneered the use of electron microscopy in chemistry before becoming Head of the Department of Physical Chemistry and Professorial Fellow at King's College Cambridge. In 1986 he succeeded Sir George Porter to become the second from last Director of the Royal Institution between 1986 and 1991. Here John lived with his family in the flat that had once been occupied by Michael Faraday and his wife in London and gave the Christmas Lectures himself in 1987, that had been started in 1826 by Faraday. While living at the Royal Institution, Thomas researched Faraday's work and published this book about Faraday and the Royal Institution in 1991.
This book is not a simple biography, since it is written by an accomplished scientist for other scientists and scientific enthusiasts to become familiar with the sheer breadth and scope of Faraday's great contributions to science. It is a meticulously researched book and goes into the intricate details of Faraday's work chronologically. It is not light reading and can take quite a long time to read due to the nature of its contents. After completing the volume an enlightened reader will be astonished at the humanity and sheer scope of Faraday's researches that have earned him the title of one of the 'Greatest Experimenters the World Has Ever Known'.
This book does not have to be read all the way through however, because many readers will recognize its importance as a reference book that can be dipped into from time to time when reading other books about the history of science.

Disappointing quality of illustrations

The subject matter was intrinsically interesting but Faraday's scientific achievements were understated. Cosidering that the author has access to all Faraday's notebooks very little of the pioneer's thinking was addressed. The illustrations were sparse and of such poor quality that some of the manuscripts reproduced were illegible..
