Doesn't age well?

I first read this book when I was in high school and I think the romance aspect appealed to me a lot more back then. Now? I hate this idea of "destined to be together" and "drawn by fate". Maybe it's just not my thing or it's a generational thing, but I felt a bit barfy when I read Zach's lines about "women". "I like to watch a woman in the garden." It just read as really patriarchal to me. It seemed like it fit weird stereotypes, what was the target audience for this? And where are these people supposed to be from? None of the dialogue sounded like anything around Massachusetts. Not even a Mainer accent. It read as Southern.
Yes, Nell comes into her own power and that development was a good read. I also liked the splash of Hollywood magic and the representation of witchcraft.

The way Zach acts about Nell's previous abuse is sweet and chivalrous until it's not. Yes, he's allowed to get angry and frustrated with her, but responding to her involuntary cringes in terror by snapping at her that "he's not that guy" or whatever. That's awful. That's not how you should treat an abuse survivor/victim. She learns to stand up to him and drawn personal boundaries, but if he was such a fantastical guy, she shouldn't have had to "teach" him in the first place. I thought that was a poor choice on the author's part.

Fantastic!

What a beautiful find! The story of Three Sisters Island was just amazing! Filled with mystery, witches, folk lore, and self discovery. The way the author describes the Island you can just see it alive in your mind! With it's main characters, three direct descendants of the original three witches of the Island, and throw in the townsfolk who live there set in motion the beginning of this trilogy that's sure to delight anyone who loves witchy stories. I'm so excited to have found this story and can't wait to read onto the next installment!!

Another hit!

Just when I think I've read enough of Nora Roberts' books, she hits it out of the ballpark for me again. I guess I'm going to have to keep reading her books. I certainly want to finish this trilogy. Witchcraft, magic and other fantasy is not normally what interests me but Roberts does a great job weaving it into the normal, everyday lives of her characters. The story of Nell and her escape from an abusive marriage hooked me from page 1. I loved the small town feel of the island, the friendships that develop, the romance with Zack, the sheriff, and the strength Nell gains when she realizes her own worth and is allowed to become her own person. I also like that it brings light to the very real psychology of abusers and their victims.
