Notorious Pleasures, by Elizabeth Hoyt

Their lives were perfect ...until they met each other. Lady Hero Batten is perfect, well-mannered and beautiful with an impeccable pedigree. After years of waiting for a gentleman to sweep her off her feet, she has decided to do her duty and settle for a proper society marriage to Thomas Remmington, the Marquess of Mandeville. True, the marquis is a trifle dull and lacks a sense of humour, but he is handsome and rich. Griffin Remmington, Lord Greyson, the Marquess' younger brother, is not at all perfect. In fact, some have called him the most notorious rake in London. When Griffin meets Hero he thinks that she is much too intelligent for society, let alone his brother. Their duel of words soon sparks a fire in them both, despite the fact that Hero's marriage to Thomas is drawing ever nearer...

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Hoyt's second Maiden Lane novel (after 2010's Wicked Intentions), set in 1737 London, initially seems to follow the formula of the naïve virgin falling prey to the profligate rake. But Lady Hero Batten is quick-witted and forthright, and she refuses to be just another conquest for Griffin Remmington, her fiancé's younger brother. When Griffin insists on accompanying Hero to the orphanage she funds in the dangerous St. Giles area of London, Hero finds him an affable and attractive companion. Their relationship changes as Hero learns that Griffin isn't merely the irresponsible younger son he has pretended to be, and Griffin struggles to meet Hero's high expectations. Fans of historical detail will love subplots involving the campaign to halt the production of gin and the overwhelming need for decent orphanages, and the mysterious happenings in St. Giles provide excitement and suspense. From Booklist
*Starred Review* As far as Lady Hero Batten is concerned, history is not about to repeat itself. Griffin Remmington may have successfully seduced his brother Thomas first wife, but there is no way on earth the notorious rake can ever tempt Hero to cheat on her practically perfect fianc. Thomas is everything Hero could wish for in a husband: handsome, wealthy, and imminently respectable. While Griffin is the exact opposite, shamelessly involved in gin distilling, even after Hero informs him of the terrible costs that that despicable trade imposes on Londons poorest citizens. Yet the more time Hero spends with Griffin, the more she begins to realize perfection isnt everything its cracked up to be. In the latest emotionally stunning addition to her Maiden Lane series, Hoyt deftly lightens her realistically dark plot with touches of deliciously dry humor, and the sinfully sensual chemistry she creates between her shrewd, acid-tongued heroine and her scandalous sexy hero is pure romance. --John Charles

Arrange Marriage Love Triangle of the Georgian Era
By Amazon Customer
Notorious Pleasures was really a 2.5 rated read. It kept my attention beginning to end and I did like both the heroine and hero. I felt their romance had a charming aspect to it: a woman arranged to be married falls for her fiance's brother, a known rake. Minor spoilers ahead that I do not think take away from the plot or intent of the novel.

Mostly this book lost points with me because it was very anachronistic. Lady Hero Batten is the patroness of an orphanage and makes trips to St. Giles (the ghetto) in secret, which allows a plot point for the heroine and the hero to spend time together (as he insists on chaperoning her). I didn't know how believable it was that a duke's sister would be able to make these trips time and time again without the help (drivers, footman) telling her brother the duke. An unmarried young lady such as herself without a chaperone going into the ghetto and meeting with architects (making purchasing decisions)? It wasn't quite convincing to me. Lady Hero is far too modern in most respects.. though she's called "Perfect" again and again, as though she is the paradigm of a society woman. But trips to the ghetto? Showing up at a man's house in the middle of the day without an escort? When she walks into a sordid situation (lovers going at it) she barely reacts as a woman of her station would be expected. I did "like" her character but I felt she belonged in a contemporary romance story. To make things extra frustrating, she will suddenly becomes quite the lady of the Georgian Era when it fits the plot constraints. For example, she will stubbornly insist on doing what her brother wants because he is the head of the household.

I did like the hero, Griffin Remmington, Lord Reading, well enough but there wasn't much too him.I really don't have much to comment on him except that he is handsome and sweet enough for the most part and treats the heroine quite well. For the most part he is a likable character that brought some humor and charm to an otherwise dull read.

The characters are wishy washy throughout - changing their minds rapidly both relenting and insisting on points and situations only to move the plot forward. Despite this lengthy commentary I didn't reveal much of the actual plot of the book, which is a rather interesting perspective of St. Giles and the time period. I believe the plot itself and the peek inside the social classes (that fit) were the strongest parts of this novel.

Overall that came in just very average for me. There are plus points here - good chemistry, funny banter, likable side characters, etc. A definite read if you enjoy arranged marriage story lines, love triangles, a Dicken's type perspective of the lower class and secret love affairs. For some readers this could be a real win.

I need a cold shower. Or a fan. Or a bucket of ice. *sigh*
By Up 'Til Dawn Book Blog
From the teaser at the end of Wicked Intentions (Book One), I knew I was going to read Notorious Pleasures sooner rather than later. And boy am I glad that I did. After thoroughly enjoying the first Elizabeth Hoyt novel, I had high expectations for this one, too. I was not disappointed.

Our story begins with Lady Hero (I know, here we go again with the peculiar names) who accidentally interrupts the scandalous acts of Lord Griffin Reading, who is unapologetically fornicating with a married woman during a ball. Wait. What?????

Soon after, our Lady Hero discovers that the mysterious and naughty Griffin is actually her soon-to-be brother-in-law, as she has just become engaged to his brother, Thomas. To say she is shocked would be an understatement.

Needless to say, things begin to heat up from there. Also included, is a side story with Silence and a certain rogue pirate that gives us a glimpse into the next book. One that is definitely already on my to-read list!

In closing...
4 fantastic suns! I can honestly say that I am beginning to fall madly in love with Elizabeth Hoyt!

Be warned, these two are not your cookie-cutter hero and heroine.
By bookworm2bookworm
This is book two in Maiden Lane series and for some reason I didn't find it as romantic as the first one. That said, I did find it steamy as hell!

I also found the secondary love stories distracting from the main characters. But all of that I could live with. What I found disturbing was the way Hero gets introduced to Griffin. That just kept creeping up every time they were together. I just couldn't get over it.

Is this a well written story? You bet. Is it well plotted? Certainly. Are the characters complex? Definitely. Are they likable? Possibly.

Am I recommending it? A resounding YES! But be warned, these two are not your cookie-cutter hero and heroine.
