THIS BOOK ROCKS

this is an amazing read, i have been developing my body and mind so i can much easier go into my higher selfs point of view as well as embody my spirit and this book is perfect for progressing yourself along that path. this book is filled with such lovely information, enlightening knowledge that is subtle as it is powerful. I have not finished this book, i am only 60 pages in, and its by far one of the best pieces of work ive put my eyes on. I am very grateful this book came into my awareness and life, and look forward to continuing to develop my psychic faculties. My soul connects me to everything , and i need to start listening, and so do you!

Great, but I wouldn't use it alone

This book can be very useful as a graduate level plasma text, or a reference, or as something to put on your shelf to make you look like a "serious" plasma physicist. It covers drifts extremely well and I was reasonably pleased with the two fluid model. But in the end if you are trying to learn plasma physics this book really shines as a SUPPLEMENT and I imagine would be pretty frustrating as your only source to learn from. I bought this book and Chen's book for my graduate plasma 1 course. I never opened Chen, referenced Goldston often throughout the course (and as expected put a lot of focus on the class notes). But honestly, I think you probably already know if you need this book.

I am a university student who major in physics. and this book was a text in plasma course. As plasma group of princeton univ. is strong, this book is strong enough to understand plasma. most favorite thing in this book is sufficient explanation about the physical and mathmatical explanation. and the not good thing is a little dirty mathmatical calculation. so if you want clear mathmatics, I think you had better look another book. Anyway if you read this from cover to cover, you can learn ABC of Plasma. isn't it wonderful?

Fun and interesting to read!

This book is very well written with amazing examples to aid the reader with such complex topics
as general relativity and quantum mechanics which can be quite confusing at first glance. I am
sure to read this again as to gain a further grasp on the subjects in this addicting book that I had a
hard time putting down. It is fascinating thoughtful, thought provoking, and pleasing to read at
the same time, with many ties to popular culture and up to date physics. I must also admit that
this book made me look up to the night sky several times after I read it and in my opinion is a
great read for the physicist and non physicist alike! The author has a knack for explaining complex
ideas that involve the vastness of the universe and the tiniest theories of Quantum mechanics with
clarity and insight. This is a good one to add to the library which I will for sure pull out of mine
several times for future reference.

An outstandingly easy and enjoyable read

If physics was this good and this interesting when I was at school then I think I would have my own PhD. Jim has written this book in the easiest and often most humerous way that even a Neanderthal could understand. It is a fun book to read and as Jim takes you from the beginings of One, Two, Three dimensions into the fourth and onto E=mc2 etc etc it is just like a "boys own" adventure story. The best dicription of "Entropy" I have ever encountered is in this book. I laughed so much when I read it. And the time travel analagy with the film "Terminator" was great. If your only a little bit interested in Physics you will be a whole lot more interested in it after you read this book. A great read which I will read again.

Jim Al-Khalili is extremely educated in this field and does a great job of explaining it to the average person. You do not need a strong background in science to understand. This is a great book for anyone interested in physics and astronomy.

Since publication of the first edition of this book in 1988, interest in the optical properties of materials has continued to grow and there have been a number of important developments in the field. The aim of this second edition is to present an up-to-date and broad picture of the field of optical constants covering the theoretical background, experimental techniques and results for a wide range of materials (bulk and thin film) over a wide spectral range from soft x-rays to microwaves.
For the second edition Dr Ward has updated the book throughout. In particular, sections have been added on the optical properties of the sulphides, selenides and tellurides of cadmium, zinc and lead. Two other new sections deal with low dimensional structures, an important and relatively recent development area, and the sensitivities of different methods for measuring ^In, ^Ik and ^Id. A new Appendix giving tabulated values of optical constants for a large number of elements, insulators and semiconductors at two common laser wavelengths completes the second edition.
The author
Leslie Ward has worked in the field of optical materials for about thirty years. He is the author of some 40 research publications and co-author of a book on the theory and practice of high-vacuum technology. From 1967 to 1982 he was Head of the Department of Applied Physics, and is currently an Honorary Research Fellow, at Coventry University.

Disaster Daily......

To truly understand a nation you need to understand how it reacts in defeat as well as victory. This is an excellent study of the former by Peter Thomson. Details of the adversaries on all sides of the conflict help to crystalise the thoughts and pervading attitude and atmosphere that both led to and propagated the greatest catastrophe and capitulation in British military history. The author's description of events, of the fighting retreat, tactics (especially of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, Australian regiments and the Anti-tank and Artillery regiments) ,of the mistakes , mis-handling, bungling and lack of foresight, as well as some of the all too short successes is exilarating reading. The many atrocities covered make the ordinary mortal question the inhumanity of the Japanese Army. More balance might have been achieved by expressing more of the enemy military strategy and better maps would have help in the understanding, but this is nevertheless an outstanding historical read. I chose to read the book in parallel with Colin Smiths book Singapore Burning which developed my understanding . The culpability for the debacle was easily discernible through the narrative and politicians in Britain, Australia and Singapore play their part in this. The desertion, at the end , by the Australian commander General Bennett, all bull and bluster, was only counterbalanced by the extreme bravery of Australian and many other nationalities. It's also fair to say that others deserted Singapore by dereliction and were not brought to book. I strongly recommend this book to anybody interested in WW2 history and the fall of an Empire.

Defenses Are Bad For Morale

The Japanese have landed in Malaya and have started their 400 mile trek south to Singapore. When various officers suggested building defense works on the north side of Singapore Island General Percival vetoed the idea saying that defense works would be bad for morale. Later when the Japanese army initiated its crossing of the narrow straits separating Singapore Island for the Malayan peninsula it was determined that General Yamashita was coordinating the attack from the top of a five story tower attached to the Palace of the Maharajah of Johore. When asked permission to fire on the tower in order to destroy this unique observation post permission was denied. The reason? If the Maharajah's palace was damaged the British government would have to reimburse the Maharajah for the damage after the war.

This book provides a detailed account of that desperate attempt to keep the Japanese from reaching Singapore. Lacking air and naval cover, and led by general officers of questionable ability the British, Indian, and Australian troops fought valiantly, but ultimately lost. It is interesting that Churchill insisted that the army fight to the last man. That directive resulted in about 10,000 casualties for the Allied Forces.

Then follows the account of the brutal occupation of Singapore. Another interesting point is that Korean soldiers in the Japanese army were even more brutal than the Japanese soldiers. While it is inspiring to read of the many heroes who fought hard and endured deprivation and torture at the hand of their conqueror, it is also sad that these men were so poorly led by their generals.

The author has written this historical drama in a fine narrative style. My interest in books like these may differ from the interests of others. I am interested in the psychological and social impact of war, how soldiers and civilians cope with the stresses of war. Why do people make the decisions that they do, and why are some people heroic while others lose their humanity. This book provides this sort of information in some detail. At times I became a bit weary of the detailed account of each battle and skirmish, but then again that is what some readers are looking for. All in all a well rounded account of a great disaster of World War II.

When the Japanese took us by surprise

It has been 46 years since I first served as a young soldier in Malaysia and Singapore. I was aware of my own Regiment's brave fight and defence actions down through the peninsula (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) and I have met survivors of that terrible time when the Japanese under General Yamashita, The Tiger of Malaya, pushed the British Forces down and back into Singapore Island which was supposed to have been a fortress. During the conflict, there was much stupidity but there was also much heroism. One of the attitudes of the time said that the Japanese could not fight in the dark and that they were too shortsighted - attitudes soon to be overcome as the fanatical Japanese pushed their way down into Malaya and then invaded the Island of Singapore. This book will take you back into those times and for those interested in the Second World War, an excellent read. There were many parts of the conflict of that time that I had been unaware of. A very gettable book...
